Bringing out the best in every child

School Conference Keynotes

Bringing out the best in every child

This interactive, fun and thought provoking keynote will explore what we can do to encourage all children to be their very best.

The current structure of the educational system values academic intelligence which does not mean that only a sub-set of our students who easily excel in this area are worth our time or are worthy of success in school.

Discovering, celebrating and leveraging the unique strengths in all children allows them to become their best selves. While this includes academic success and achievement, it goes so much further.

Creative lessons that include physical exercises, art, drama and more can capture students’ interest so well because they evoke their senses in a strong way. In this presentation we pose the questions of how can we create lessons in math, Spanish, writing, or world history that do just this? This interactive, fun and thought provoking session will explore what we can do to encourage all children to be their very best.

The amazing brain – the growth mind-set, memory techniques and meta-cognition

Memory Techniques for the classroom - The Amazing Brain

This keynote talk incorporates memory techniques, taking control of mental ability, developing memory muscle, storytelling and learning techniques.

Empowering students to take responsibility for their own learning in a fun and creative way increases learning ability. Many children and teenagers believe people are born with a good memory or a mental ability for learning and intelligence. They assume they will be good at maths or English because their parents were.

The flipside if this mindset dictates that if your parents were not academic, neither will you be. Research shows such beliefs can make a huge difference in how children learn and achieve in both school and in later in life. Those who adopt this ‘fixed’ mind-set believe their abilities and intelligence are static and outside of their control. However we now know intelligence and ability is not set and children and young people who understand this gain confidence and learning ability. This is known as a growth mindset.

Simply by understanding more about the brain and how it works gives children and young people the ability to recognise their potential and ability, to take on challenges, persist and develop. This presentation incorporates memory techniques, taking control of mental ability, developing memory muscle, storytelling and learning techniques.

Raising targets - the science of laughter, humour and happiness for raising targets

Raising targets - the science of laughter, humour and happiness for raising targets

In this presentation you will learn how to increase laughter and fun in learning and create a happy, positive environment.

Great teachers know how to make learning fun. Enjoying learning is the key to information sticking and ensuring it makes sense. Studies have shown that laughter in learning creates an increase in white blood cell activity and produces changes in the balance of the blood. It also increase the brains production of the neurotransmitters necessary for alertness, memory and learning.

Scientists studying brain based learning say that humour stimulates both the left and right sides of the brain. The "right brain" connects the memory to the pleasurable moment of laughter. The "left" brain ties the subject content to a memorable emotional moment.

What this means is that we understand the message better and remember it longer when information is accompanied by humour and fun. Learning and teaching in this way also reduces stress and decreases negative neurotransmitters like cortisol that block learning.

In this presentation you will learning how to increase laughter and fun in learning and create a happy, positive environment. During the presentation you will enjoy practical techniques that can be used in class as well as understanding how to keep control and ensure appropriateness is adhered to. The presentation will present case studies where fun and laughter have been introduced successfully, increasing targets and attendance.

The importance of play for brain development

School Conference Keynotes

The importance of play for brain development

This keynote talk will cover imaginative play techniques, letting children take the lead, unstructured play and the importance of fun and laughter.

Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth. Play also offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children.

Despite the benefits derived from play for both children and parents, time for free play has been markedly reduced for some children because of a variety of factors including working parents, socio-economic factors, lack of space and lack of knowledge on how to play.

While children need time to play alone and with other children, playing with their parents is also important. This presentation will cover helpful ways to encourage children and parents to play more including establishing regular play times, imaginative play techniques, letting children take the lead, unstructured play and the importance of fun and laughter.
