Managing stress and building resilience with Adecco

On 8th February, Adecco held their 2024 Manager’s Kick-Off. The theme? ‘Make Work Mean More’. Wanting to educate, invigorate, and titillate attendees, they invited a host of speakers, one of whom was our very own Laura Drury.

Adecco takes pride in ‘putting their people first’, and so Laura was tasked with delivering a keynote session to enable the participants to identify the pressures and stressors of working life and equip them with ways to help manage those stressors for both their people and themselves.

This was the perfect opportunity to deliver one of Laughology’s most popular sessions, FLIP it Thinking. F.L.I.P. stands for Focus, Language, Imagination and Pattern Breaking and is a hugely practical tool based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It enables you to create awareness of how you’re thinking in the moment you feel stressed and what to do to challenge and change that thinking to start feeling better.

They also discussed the importance of laughter at work (to help boost the positive, feel-good brain chemicals and reduce the stress ones such as cortisol and noradrenaline) and humour (to help look at life through a different lens and stop wonky thinking in its tracks).

To get a good dose of that laughter themselves, like all Laughology’s sessions, the learning was shared through different fun activities. This helps make the learning sticky and memorable. Being held at the IMAX cinema at the Science Museum in London, and with an audience of 300, the power got to Laura’s head, and she got carried away encouraging all sorts of silliness, including finger pulling, drawing and counting to 3 – you didn’t read that wrong, and yes, it was very funny.

Described by many as a ‘brilliant session’, the main takeaway was prioritising laughter to not only help boost resilience but create a connection with one another. Laughter is not only the best medicine but also creates feelings of trust and social connection with those you laugh with, so why wouldn’t you do more of it at work?
