Wolviston Primary School, in Billingham, nominated for the happiest school in the UK award.

Wolviston Primary School

What has the drummer from the band Smokie, a professional golfer, an ex-Premier League footballer, a singer in a local band and Pauline the Postmistress got in common? They have all tasted the delights of school dinners at the top table in Wolviston Primary School.

As part of her happiest school nomination Katie Haycock, Headteacher at Wolviston explains: 'We hold a monthly Mayor’s Table where a child, who is nominated by their teacher, is rewarded with lunch on the top table with the head teacher and a VIPs from all walks of life'.

But there is more to school happiness than a happy meal, and Wolviston Primary makes sure that children's time includes 'big fun and exciting learning opportunities'.

Katie goes on to say: 'Every fortnight we have celebration assemblies led by our head boy and girl, which celebrate not only successes in reading, writing and maths but also children’s talents. We even sometimes have demonstrations from children, so in between ‘Star writers’ getting certificates there may be a ballroom dancer or karate demonstration. We like to celebrate kindness too, so we have a ‘bucket filler’ list where anyone can be nominated who has ‘filled someone’s bucket’ with a kind word or action'.

The school motto is ‘Small school, big dreams’ and they truly live up to that motto, with Wolviston's Got Talent shows, where children and staff get the opportunity to sing, dance, play a musical instrument, tell jokes and show off their finest animal impressions.

But it's not all about fun. Throughout the year teacher and pupils hold charitable events for the Poppy Appeal, the local food bank, Race for Life, Macmillan's Cancer Support coffee morning and a non-uniform day for Joseph’s Goals charity.

Wolviston Primary sounds like it's doing all the right things to create a happy environment and put pupil wellbeing at the heart of the school. What is your school doing to build a happy school? Do you think it would be in with a chance of winning the Happiest School in the UK award?

Nominate your school, a pupil, or support staff for a National Happiness Award 2018. Nominations close soon so don't delay nominate today.
