FLIP-it at Executive & Personal Assistants Association

Laura Drury joined the lineup of speakers at the EPAA Summit for Executive and Personal Assistants to focus on mental health and wellbeing.

She delivered a session on FLIP It thinking and gave delegates the tools and techniques to challenge negative thought patterns, build resilience and view problems from different perspectives.

When feeling overwhelmed or stressed, it’s all too easy to get stuck in negative patterns. Raising awareness and ‘flipping’ thinking patterns can move people forward.
F.L.I.P. stands for:

  • Focus – We are neurologically wired to respond emotionally to the situations we find ourselves in. Take a moment to pause (breathing can help – as can laughing) and re-focus on what is within your control.
  • Language – Be aware of the language you use when thinking to yourself and talking to others. Words are emotive. Consider the emotions your words reflect.
  • Imagination – We predict the future all the time. Our imaginations are powerful, in positive and inhibiting ways. Be master of your imagination and let it help you grow.
  • Pattern breaking – We are all capable of change, the key is the desire to do so. It will be uncomfortable and weird at first, you’ll continue to make mistakes, but practice makes perfect.

Laura delivered the session and heard stories and insights from other people in the room, including former boxer Frank Bruno. He talked about his book and his experiences battling mental health. Only by opening communication in this way can we remove the stigma and make a difference. Know what I mean ‘arry?
