Parkland Primary School nominated for a Happiest School Award 2017

Paul Stone, from Parkland Primary School, who nominated parkland, said in his nomination:

Parklands place the happiness and wellbeing of their pupils at the heart of their decision-making from the creation of their school values and aim to embody their beliefs in staff meetings, events for parents, governing meetings and most of all the events and support they give to their children.

The school uses their emotional support assistants to create an atmosphere of trust and resilience empowering children to overcome their difficulties and remain positive.

The headteacher is renowned for ensuring everyone is looked after and is happy she can often be heard using the phrase "Positive Pants Everyone!" the behaviour leaders and parent support workers work closely with families and have established a real buzz of positivity and Brightside thinking. Children explore ways to deal with problems and how to have a positive outlook on life throughout the curriculum and look to help others through their random acts of kindness campaigns and other events to encourage a happy community.

All the staff steam creates an ethos to live by and support each other through difficult times. Two members of staff have had a quite serious illness and have fundraised for charities. The school is part of a collaborative to share support initiatives for children's mental health working with local educational psychologists and involving families within these projects. The pastoral team at Parklands has established positive culture of collaboration for families in difficulties finding them support where possible and providing a haven for those in difficulties such as the creation of food banks and counseling for parents in need.

They share their work with families through partnership events and through twitter sharing all the good work of the children, staff, and parents in supporting their children. They host aspiration days encouraging children and families to see what the world has to offer regarding careers and that there are no barriers to children achieving their goals.

All schools who visit comment on the positive atmosphere within the school and the low levels of conflict between children. The school is situated within a challenging area of Leicestershire but refuses to accept that background or location narrows their opportunities in life. Pupil's voice is a key part of the schools’ success setting up a highly effective school council and bank led by the children.

They host a whole school dance festival where parents and children joined in together in a giant mass participation event. Each year they host children’s conferences on Saturdays organised and led by staff at Parkland for Science, ICT, and Maths. These conferences are attended by around 13 local schools with pupil attendance numbers of at least 120 pupils.
