Staff well-being and enhancing communication with Flying Start

Laughology was asked by Flying Start in Rhyl to deliver our 'Happy Teams' workshop to an audience that consisted of health visitors, nursery nurses, midwives, admin workers, teaching assistants, family support workers, teachers and managers.

The staff of Denbighshire Flying Start, in Rhyl, make sure that children have the opportunity to learn, develop and play, by maximising children’s early learning opportunities, and supporting families to look after the health and development of their children before and after birth.

Essentially they do really serious, and stressful, work supporting vulnerable families and children in their own community. But that doesn't seem to have dampened their sense of humour: clearly shown by the way they threw themselves into the Laughology workshop.

The brief from Flying Start was to:

  • Make the workshop fun
  • Provide a better understanding of how staff can work together
  • Improve communication, motivation and happiness

The Laughology 'Happy Teams' workshop is focused on enhancing engagement, increasing motivations and giving a clearer view of team dynamics.

When we looked at happiness, simple factors were discovered that could easily improve the happiness of individuals and teams such as actually taking a lunch break. Too often this is frowned upon in a demanding job, but we discussed how a workforce is more productive when it looks after itself.

They embraced the exercise where groups had to create a love letter in a fixed style of communication and the afternoon session ended on a high, with many thinking differently about how to get their point across.
