NHS England – Appraisers Development Day

NHS England – Appraisers Development Day

Laughology Workshop- People, communication, influence and humour

Center Pacs, Thetford

30th June 2016

Set in the stunning location of Thetford at Elveden Center Parcs, Juliette Yardley delivered a workshop for the NHS.   The workshops focus was People, Communication and influence and was part of the GP’s appraisal development day.

The session looked at skills to help GP’s get the most out of others during an appraisal meeting through using a wide range of communication tools. There were some great discussions about who and what makes a fantastic communicator and how then the GP’s could consider their own style. Suggestions ranged from Mohammad Ali to ‘mum’ giving really thorough reasons as to why their style was so very persuasive.

During the workshop Juliette gave examples of how to be mindful of body language.   GP’s were challenged to place volunteers in exaggerated positions to enable them to get the most ‘open’ and engaging posture. The interactive session looked at persuasive and positive language to enhance non-verbal ques and how to use humour carefully as a tool to engage. Part of the session was incorporating different thinking styles into how we communicate and how understanding what makes someone else tick.  All these skills were part of building and developing the dynamics of great interaction.

All in all the GP’s took away some new tools to enhance their communication skills, they laughed and the learning was enhances by the wonderful setting.  Juliette’s only regret…. that she didn’t bring her swim suit to hurl heself down the water rapids in the Tropical Paradise Centre!
