Am I Bovvered? Motivation and Flow at Natwest

Well, here we all are, stuck firmly in the latter stages of Lockdown 2.0. All the jigsaws have been done, everything has been power washed to within an inch of its life and Dave is developing a passing resemblance to a leftover slice of banana bread.

Couple this with nights drawing in and the possibility that Christmas might still be cancelled, and you could understand that, at this point, most people’s reserves of lockdown chutzpah and motivation are beginning to wane.

It was for reasons such as this that Lead Happiness Consultant, Dave Keeling, was called in to add a spark to the early careers team meeting at Natwest. Fifteen delegates were taken through a fast-paced interactive session, which encompassed the Formula for Flow (Energy, Openness and Focus).

When we take responsibility for these three areas, not only do we have better thoughts, but it also leads to better behaviours and actions. This has a positive knock-on effect on those around us.

Dave backed up the theory with a selection of practical activities, which included:

  • The four reactions to change (using characters from Winnie the Pooh)
  • A game of Guess Who - helping to reflect on the way our unconscious brain can blind us to the opportunities around us
  • A team game where new products were created from everyday objects - allowing for creativity, collaboration and communications to be enjoyed and developed.

The whole session whizzed by and everyone left feeling 100% more motivated than they did when they arrived, giving Dave the incentive to bake just one more banana bread.
